THE REVIEW
The inaugural COLD FURY took place on December 14th, 2001 in Lawrence, MA. At that time in Chaotic Wrestling, three men dominated the company - Ronnie D. Lishus, Edward G. Xtasy and "Teen Idol" Aaron Stevens - collectively known as the One Night Stand. ONS held the majority of the gold going into COLD FURY, with Stevens and Xtasy the defending CW Tag Team Champions and Ronnie D. as the reigning CW Heavyweight Champion. By the end of the night, however, ONS would be left defeated, decimated and virtually out of Chaotic Wrestling.
The first defeat came to One Night Stand when there were no clear number one contenders to the CW Tag Team titles at COLD FURY. Co-holder of that title Edward G. Xtasy was involved in a contract dispute with Chaotic management and his future with the company was in jeopardy. Xtasy foolishly entered the ring and attempted to show Chaotic Wrestling the power he held in the negotiations by quitting the company and taking the CW Tag Team Titles with him. Unfortunately for Xtasy and his tag team partner Stevens, "Hurricane" John Walters and "Good Time" Vince Vicallo (who had faced each other earlier in the night for the Chaotic Wrestling Television Title) came to the ring and received an immediate title shot.
Xtasy and Stevens were no match for the technical abilities and athleticism of Walters and Vicallo. For the first time in months, the One Night Stand found themselves on the losing end of a match, staring at new CW Tag Team Champions. As Walters and Vicallo celebrated, Xtasy was met at the locker room door by management and immediately escorted out of the building. He would not be seen in Chaotic Wrestling for months and never regained the tag team gold. Stevens stayed with the company and eventually won the Chaotic Wrestling Heavyweight Title before being signed by World Wrestling Entertainment.
In the main event, Ronnie D. Lishus defended the CW Heavyweight Championship against arguably the most popular star in Chaotic Wrestling history, "Latin Fury" Luis Ortiz. The feud had been brewing for months, with Ortiz stalking Ronnie D. and the ONS like a demon posessed. As if there were not already enough drama going into the match, Chaotic Wrestling fans voted online and determined that the main event would be a Lumberjack Match, with the entire Chaotic Wrestling roster surrounding the ring. Throughout the match, Ronnie D. attempted to use his size and strength, plus the assistance of some of the lumberjacks, to wear down Ortiz. But at the first COLD FURY, "Latin Fury" was not to be denied. As Ronnie D. lay in the center of the ring, Ortiz landed his trademark "Infuriator" (a split-legged moonsault) and scored the victory.
With the pinfall, Ortiz solidified his place in Chaotic Wrestling history as the first Triple-Crown winner and a future Chaotic Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee. Even more importantly, COLD FURY was established as THE local wrestling event of the year in New England. |
